The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has concluded its Council Exit Meeting in Jos, Plateau State, formally drawing the curtain on the University of Jos' hosting cycle for the 27th NUGA Games while setting the stage for the 28th edition scheduled to hold at the University of Calabar in 2026.
The two-day meeting, which ended on June 11 at the Management Sciences Auditorium of the University of Jos, brought together sports administrators, council members, directors of sports, chairmen of sports committees, institutional representatives, delegates from newly admitted universities, and other stakeholders within Nigeria's university sports community.
Among those in attendance were the Acting Secretary General of NUGA, Mr. Yunusa Madi Bazza; the Vice President of NUGA, Dr. Ajibua Alayode; Ex-Officio members, Professor Stephen Hamafyelto and Professor Rasheed Ojutiku; Technical Chairman, Professor Yakasai; alongside other council members and representatives of member institutions.
The meeting reviewed activities undertaken since the last Council and Emergency Meetings, assessed progress in key areas of university sports administration, and examined strategies aimed at strengthening governance, competitions, participation, and athlete development across member institutions.
Council members also received updates on recent national and international engagements, including the NUSSA Games and Nigeria's participation at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation by representatives of the University of Calabar on preparations for the 28th NUGA Games. The presentation enabled the Council to assess the level of readiness of the host institution while discussing expectations for the competition.
The Council noted the steady progress being made towards Calabar 2026 and reaffirmed its confidence in the University's commitment to hosting a successful Games that will further promote university sports and student-athlete development.
Beyond preparations for the Games, Council deliberated on issues relating to institutional participation and membership, reviewed research and academic initiatives through the Scientific Conference Committee, and received updates on preparations for the forthcoming 12th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games.
In a significant governance milestone, the Council also considered and adopted the reviewed NUGA Constitution, a move expected to strengthen the Association's administrative framework and support its continued growth.
The meeting further provided an avenue for engagement with development partners and innovators, with presentations exploring collaboration opportunities in sports development and the application of emerging digital technologies to improve university sports administration and operations.
As proceedings came to a close, Council reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing university sports administration, expanding opportunities for student-athletes, and ensuring adequate preparations for future national and continental competitions.
With the successful conclusion of the University of Jos hosting cycle, attention now turns to the University of Calabar, where preparations continue for what stakeholders hope will be another landmark edition of the Nigerian University Games.
