The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has officially commenced its journey towards hosting the forthcoming Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games with the flag-off of its Sports for All Ceremony, aimed at promoting active participation in sports among staff and students.

In a circular signed by the Registrar of the University, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, the institution announced that the ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The event, which forms part of activities leading to the hosting of the NUGA Games by the University of Calabar, is also in line with the approval of the University Senate declaring Wednesdays, except on Inaugural Lecture days, as Sporting Activities Day.

Management has directed all staff and students to participate fully in the exercise and be seated before the arrival of the Vice Chancellor. Deans, Heads of Departments and Heads of Units have also been instructed to release their staff and students to attend the ceremony.

To ensure maximum participation, the University Management has declared Wednesday, June 24, 2026, lecture-free from 1:00 p.m. across the institution.

In a subsequent corrigendum issued by the University, the venue for the Sports for All Flag-Off Ceremony was changed from the Abraham Ordia Stadium to the Hogan Bassey Car Park Open Pavilion, opposite the Medical Centre. All other details regarding the event remain unchanged.

The ceremony is expected to herald a new era of sporting excellence within the institution as preparations intensify for the successful hosting of the NUGA Games, while also fostering physical fitness, unity and community engagement among members of the University community.

The Sports for All initiative underscores the University's commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening participation in sporting activities as a vital component of campus life.
