As anticipation continues to build for the 28th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, the University of Calabar has unveiled the inspiring story behind the official mascot chosen to represent the prestigious sporting festival.

The mascot, the Cross River Gorilla, was carefully selected as a symbol of the rich ecological heritage of Cross River State and the enduring values that define both sportsmanship and human excellence. The Cross River Gorilla is the theme animal of the Okwangwo Division of Cross River National Park, established by the Federal Government in 1991, and is one of the world's most critically endangered primate species.

Found primarily within the Okwangwo Division of Cross River National Park in Nigeria and the Takamanda National Park in Cameroon, the Cross River Gorilla holds significant cultural and environmental importance to the people of Cross River State. Its selection as the mascot reflects the host state's commitment to preserving its natural heritage while showcasing it on a national platform.

Beyond its ecological significance, the Cross River Gorilla embodies qualities that resonate strongly with the ideals of the NUGA Games. Known for its strength, resilience, determination, intelligence, and cooperative nature, the animal represents the character and discipline required of athletes striving for excellence in competition.

According to the organisers, these attributes mirror the spirit of the NUGA Games, where participants are encouraged to demonstrate courage, perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship both on and off the field of play. The mascot's bold yet peaceful disposition further symbolizes the unity and friendship that the Games seek to foster among universities across the country.

Adding to its significance, the medals worn by the mascot serve as a representation of the various achievements attainable through dedication, hard work, and commitment to sporting excellence. They stand as a reminder of the rewards that await athletes who embody the values of discipline and fair competition.

The mascot was designed by Osunwa Augustus Ondinakachukwu, a student of the Accounting Department, University of Calabar, whose creative vision brought the symbol to life for the 28th NUGA Games.

As the countdown to the Games continues, the Cross River Gorilla stands not only as a symbol of the competition but also as an ambassador of Cross River State's natural heritage, inspiring athletes and spectators alike to pursue excellence while embracing unity, resilience, and teamwork.
