The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong, has officially announced that the institution will host the 28th edition of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games from November 14 to 24, 2026, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events in the university's history. The university was earlier confirmed as host of the Games after receiving the NUGA hosting flag and signing a Memorandum of Agreement with the association.
Speaking during a press conference at the University Senate Chambers in Calabar, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that about 50 universities are expected to participate in the Games, with more than 50,000 athletes, officials and spectators anticipated to attend. A total of 28 sporting events will feature during the competition.
As preparations intensify, Prof. Offiong challenged students of the institution to begin serious training with the goal of emerging overall champions and topping the medal table at the Games.
To support the university's ambitions, he announced the introduction of a weekly sports development initiative. Under the programme, lectures will be suspended every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to enable students participate in sporting activities aimed at discovering and nurturing talents for NUGA 2026 and beyond.
According to him, the initiative will not only strengthen the university's medal prospects but also create opportunities for students to represent the institution and Nigeria in future national and international competitions.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in the university's readiness to host the Games, describing the event as an opportunity to showcase UNICAL's commitment to excellence in academics and sports. He noted that the institution is determined to provide a memorable experience for athletes, officials and visitors.
Prof. Offiong also highlighted the long-term benefits of hosting the Games, stating that the event would accelerate the development of modern sports facilities on campus and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. The university, he said, plans to establish world-class sporting infrastructure that will continue to serve both the institution and the wider community after the Games.
He acknowledged the support of the Cross River State Government and called on corporate organisations, alumni, political leaders, the media and other stakeholders to partner with the university in delivering a successful tournament.
The University of Calabar last hosted the NUGA Games in 1990, and the return of the event to Calabar after 35 years is widely regarded as a major boost for university sports and sports tourism in Cross River State.
Prof. Offiong assured the NUGA Council of the university's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, sportsmanship and organisational excellence, expressing optimism that the 2026 edition would set new benchmarks for university sports in Nigeria.
